Ideas and Tech to Tackle Global Challenges

Changer is a five-month Impact Innovation program in which interdisciplinary teams work to solve global challenges by building scalable projects based on CERN and Politecnico di Torino technologies.

SEI Changer

Changer is a 5-month impact innovation program in which interdisciplinary teams of post graduate talents address global challenges along with CERN.

Changer is the module of the School of Entrepreneurship & Innovation dedicated to the world of Impact Innovation. The aim of the whole program is to apply the most advanced technologies to help solve problems of social interest, with the ambition to generate a significant impact on the world in a medium-long term perspective.
Each year, this project involves 50 young talents, 35 MBA students from CDI Italia and 15 PhD students from Politecnico di Torino with a scientific-engineering background, divided into groups and supported by researchers from CERN and the Politecnico di Torino to develop business ideas capable of positively impacting the challenges linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG).

From the work done by the teams between Turin and Geneva, 8 business ideas are born each year to offer innovative products or services to the market. The teams are supported by partner companies and institutions, as well as by a network of mentors made up of entrepreneurs and professionals and learn to apply advanced technological tools and solutions, accessing makerspaces and tech libraries that give them the opportunity to create working prototypes. The project also makes use of the collaboration of companies and institutions, which guide the students with the challenges on which to concentrate their efforts to find workable solutions.
The results are presented each year to an audience of companies, entrepreneurs and investors, during a demo-day.

The program is open to MBA fellows of CDI Italia and to 15 students engaged in a doctorate at the Politecnico di Torino. The opening of the selections for the PhD students takes place at the start of the first semester of each academic year and is communicated each year directly by the secretariat of the Doctoral School (Scudo) of Politecnico di Torino. Participation in the program entails for all PhD students the achievement of the 60 CFU corresponding to soft skills.
Changer is run in collaboration with CERN Ideasquare: a centre specializing in experimental innovation at CERN.

Changer has a total duration of about five months.
The kick-off of the program takes place every year at the start of February.
During the months of March and May, for the visioning and prototyping phases, the participants carry out week long workshops at Geneva in the CERN Ideasquare experimental innovation centre.
The fruit of the intensive work of the 8 teams participating in the program is presented each year to an audience of companies, entrepreneurs and investors during a demo day held at the end of June in Turin.
